Early in its history, the West Seattle Farmers Market was voted “West Seattle’s best newest tradition.” Ten years later, there is no doubt that the farmers market has become a well-established Sunday ritual in the heart of the Junction, attracting increasing number of loyal shoppers who love the seasonal farm harvests, fabulous cheeses, fresh eggs, wild salmon and grass-fed meats.

The market has grown from summers-only to a year-round event, so shoppers can enjoy seasonal farm foods in winter, spring, summer and fall. The 2008-2009 winter season saw a 34% increase in customers, and market tables carried a healthy selection of winter greens, root veggies, organic meats, dairy and seafood.

To kick off the spring season, on May 24, coinciding with the Junction’s “Live Local Day,” the farmers market will host its annual and very popular free mule wagon rides for kids of all ages, and free sweet pea starts courtesy of Langley Gardens, who sell their beautiful plant starts and vegetables at the market. The mule wagon will load passengers in front of the market for an old-fashioned jaunt around the Junction, with the first run starting at about 10 am and the last run at about 1:30 pm on Sunday, May 24.

This summer, there will be a fabulous 10th Anniversary Celebration at the market on June 28, 10 am to 2 pm. To honor these 10 bountiful years of good food, hard-working farmers, and wonderful community support, the celebration will feature one of our best-loved locally-grown treats: berries! The public is invited to enjoy free berry treats, berry samples, games, gifts, recipes and live music at the market, 10 am to 2 pm on June 28.

The West Seattle Farmers Market is open every Sunday, 10 am to 2 pm, with a cornucopia of local, seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables, farm-fresh eggs, cheeses, organic meats, seafood, ciders, preserves, cut flowers, artisan breads and baked goods and other items from local farms and food artisans. The market also hosts live music and special events for kids during the summer and fall – for updates and events schedules, please visit
