Seattle Neighborhood Group offers training workshops for landlords, property managers, and real estate managers!

Seattle Neighborhood Group is a local non-profit organization dedicated to making our communities strong and safe places to live. We support local property managers and landlords by providing critical information on keeping properties safe and crime free.

This workshop is great for managers who want to brush up on their management skills, as well as for people who have never been landlords before.

After attending this workshop you will be able to…

• Screen applications fairly & legally
• Create excellent rental agreements
• Deal with problems before they escalate
• Identify illegal behavior, especially relating to drug activity on your property
• Avoid situations that lead to difficult evictions
• Learn about recent changes to landlord/tenant laws
• Prevent illegal activity
• Work with your residents to make your property a great place to be.

SNG’s upcoming training is 8 hours, and costs $25, which includes a comprehensive Landlord Manual, and of course…snacks! (breakfast, morning, and afternoon).

The workshop will be held at the at 3515 S. Alaska on November 17th.

This Sunday, October 25: Annual Pumpkin Decorating Extravaganza at the Broadway Sunday and West Seattle farmers markets! Bring your kids (and the one that lurks inside), grab a pumpkin and go to town with all manner of ghoulish deco and artistic accoutrement; paints, glitter, glue, pipe cleaners, googley-eyes, yarn, leaves, corn silk, etc. The decorating choices are endless and the results are always original. This event is free and open to the public. Decoration materials are provided by the farmers market, and some pumpkins will be provided by local farmers (shoppers are also welcome to purchase a pumpkin of their choice from market farmers). Also, pumpkin decorating at the Columbia City farmers market this Wednesday, October 21.

The West Seattle farmers market is located at California Ave., SW and SW Alaska in the heart of the West Seattle Junction, Sundays, 10 AM to 2 PM. The Broadway farmers market is located at 10th Ave., East and East Thomas St., Sundays, 11 AM to 3 PM. Hello Alki Friends and Statue Supporters:

Well, it’s been an interesting 2 years since we started the new Alki community group Seattle Statue of Liberty Plaza Project.  A renewed commitment was needed to finish the Statue Plaza as envisioned by the community and designed by two wonderful architects (Matt Hutchins & Chris Ezzell) who had given generously of their time and talent as they created a compelling vision for this special place on Alki Beach. 

This Saturday, with the help of our own Astronaut from West Seattle, we celebrate the conclusion of our work as the community group that raised the money which completed this long awaited project.  It will be a special celebration as we bury a new 50 year time capsule (as the Scouts did in 1952) and as we celebrate the additional 852 bricks and new tribute plaques “seriously” requested by community members. 

We will also celebrate the “passing of the torch” of this beloved icon and place onto the Alki Community Council as they will continue to act as its steward on behalf of the Alki community.

We hope you can join us for this wonderful celebration and hear what our own Astronaut, Greg Johnson, has to say.  Paul and I have been honored to have personally met so many of you, made new friends and have felt your sincere appreciation and support for our leadership efforts. It has been a privilege to serve in this way.

Council Member Sally Clark has posted to her website a new “Guide to Backyard Cottages in Southeast Seattle.”

The guide provides pictures and information on the backyards cottages that have been built in southeast Seattle since 2006. The guide is available for viewing on Council Member Clark’s website

There will be a public hearing on September 15th, at 5:30 in Council Chambers in City Hall. The public is encouraged to come and testify at the hearing.

Elliott bay and Duwamish History: George Blomberg to speak at Log House Museum

Tuesday, September 8, 7 p.m. at the Log House Museum, George Blomberg, who has been working on industrial development and environmental programs at the Port of Seattle since 1985, will give a talk and photo presentation on the scope of landscape change in south Elliott Bay and the Duwamish River estuary, from 1854 to the present. The talk will provide historical context for considering future economic, community, and environmental change in the Duwamish industrial area. His talk is jointly sponsored by the Southwest Seattle Historical Society and the Pacific Northwest Historians Guild and is part of Telling Our Westside Stories: the Land, a program focus of the Log House Museum for 2009. Admission is free; donations accepted.
